Priors on scale parameters (e.g., the sigma parameter in a normal distribution) were historically gamma-distributed. But the parameterization of gamma distributions isn’t super intuitive and so a lot of people prefer to use a half normal. But ultimately, you should do some prior predictive checking to see if you model + your priors yield results that make sense to you. See this notebook for information about this workflow.
