Thanks @bob-carpenter and @bwengals! I ended up figuring it out and was able to set meaningful values for used P(\alpha < \alpha_0)=\epsilon. The model runs smoothly now, and it feels good to have chosen priors with solid theoretical grounding. Really appreciate the pointer!
