GSoC 2026 Introduction — Survival Models project (Sky Sabarre)

Hi PyMC community — I’m Sky, a sophomore CS student at the University of Houston with a Math minor. I’m interested in applying to GSoC 2026 to work on the Survival Models project.

Background: I’m currently taking Statistics for the Sciences covering probability distributions, regression, and Bayesian probability alongside my CS coursework in data structures and algorithms. I’m interested in ML/AI research long-term and targeting a thesis-based master’s degree.

I’m drawn to the Survival Models project because it sits at the intersection of probabilistic modeling and real-world inference — the declarative API goal is a concrete engineering challenge and the parametric distributions connect directly to what I’m studying right now.

I just opened my first contribution to the repo: [Maintenance] Add filterwarnings("error") to test_func_utils (refs #6408)Add filterwarnings(error) to test_func_utils and fix deprecated warni… by skysabarre · Pull Request #8224 · pymc-devs/pymc · GitHub — adding filterwarnings(“error”) to test_func_utils.py as part of issue #6408.

I plan to submit my proposal before March 31. Any guidance on scoping the proposal or specific areas to focus on would be appreciated.
